Mississippi Officials (updated May 12)

Stop Racist Redistricting!

Join Mississippians from Moss Point to Tunica and stand up against racist redistricting following the Supreme Court's gutting of the Voting Rights Act.  While the Governor indicates the previously planned special session will not go forward on May 20, that does NOT mean we're in the clear!  State leaders need to hear from their constituents that we refuse to see our state go backwards and we refuse to see Black voters in Mississippi be disenfranchised.

Call Governor Tate Reeves at 601-359-3150, Lt. Governor Delbert Hosemann at 601-359-3200, and House Speaker Jason White at 601-359-3300.   Find contact information for your House member here and for your Senator here.  Consider any of the following talking points:

2026 Legislative Session

The 2026 legislative session recently came to a close, but that's no reason to stop calling your elected officials.  We encourage you to see how your state senator and representative voted on legislation that matters to you and follow up with them about those votes, as well as any issues you'd like the Legislature to address in 2027.  Find details on legislation here, and find contact information for your House member here and for your Senator here

Here are the outcomes of several bills Mississippi United was watching this session:

  • SB 2588, the SHIELD Act.  The Legislature passed this voter suppression bill, and Governor Reeves signed it into law.  Beginning July 1, those registering to vote in Mississippi will be required to prove their citizenship status with a birth certificate or passport, if it cannot be established from the driver's license number on their registration application.  While proponents of the new law insist it is necessary to keep non-citizens from voting, opponents point out that it is already illegal for non-citizens to vote, there is no data showing non-citizens do vote in Mississippi, and the proof of citizenship requirements effectively serve as a poll tax, which will prevent a number of eligible voters, Republicans and Democrats alike, from exercising their right to vote.  Mississippi United encouraged folks to call their senators and representatives and sent a letter opposing this legislation to all Mississippi state lawmakers on March 23.

  • SB 2114 / HB 538, Anti-Immigrant Legislation.  The Legislature passed these bills, and Governor Reeves signed them into law, establishing criminal penalties for undocumented immigrants entering the state from foreign nations and requiring all county and municipal law enforcement to cooperate with ICE under 287(g) agreements, without exception.  SB 2114 also effectively turns the Mississippi Department of Public Safety into an arm of ICE, making DPS responsible for immigration enforcement.  It will increase the state bureaucracy and cost taxpayer money, and will be a drain on local economies throughout the state, all while traumatizing families.  Enforcement of our state criminal code is sufficient to get any actual violent, criminal immigrants off our streets without causing unnecessary trauma.  Furthermore, data from the Cato Institute demonstrates that immigrants are a net positive to our economy, reducing the federal deficit by nearly $15 TRILLION over the past thirty years.  And undocumented immigrants are far less likely to be incarcerated than U.S. citizens, dispelling the myth that immigrants make our communities less safe.  Mississippi United encouraged people to call their senators and representatives and also sent letters opposing these bills to all state lawmakers on February 10 and March 23.

  • HB 2, Private School Vouchers / HB 1944, Children's Promise Act / Sending Public Money to Private Schools.  The Legislature did not pass a private school voucher or "school choice" law this session, even though both the Speaker of the House and the Governor pushed for it.  Once leadership realized the Senate would not support private school vouchers, they tried to expand a program that sends public money to unaccountable private schools through tax credits in the Children's Promise Act.  Ultimately, supporters failed to expand that facet of the Children's Promise Act.  Mississippi United encouraged people to call their elected officials about this legislation and also sent letters to state lawmakers opposing the provision of public money to unaccountable private schools on January 5, February 10, and March 23.

  • SCR 518 / Ballot Initiative. SCR 518 did not pass this session.  Proponents of SCR 518 touted the legislation as a restoration of the ballot initiative, even though it did not restore Mississippians' right to amend the constitution and even though it limited the issues for which a ballot initiative could be held.  Mississippi United urged folks to call their senators and representatives about this legislation and also sent letters to state lawmakers opposing the "baloney" ballot initiative and urging true restoration of the ballot initiative on February 10.

U.S. Congress (updated April 20)

Call the U.S. Capitol Switchboard at (202) 224-3121 and ask to be directed to your congressperson's office, or call the office directly.

U.S. Senator Roger Wicker (202) 224-6253

  • Speak out against the State of Mississippi's recognition of Confederate Memorial Day and publicly urge state lawmakers to remove it as an official state holiday.  In 2015, you courageously explained, "I now believe our state flag should be put in a museum and replaced by one that is more unifying to all Mississippians."  Please muster that same courage now.

  • Urge the invocation of the 25th Amendment to remove the President immediately

  • SUPPORT the war powers resolution immediately

  • OPPOSE additional funding for the war in Iran, unless specifically tied to a concrete, feasible and immediate plan for withdrawal

  • As Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, call for and lead a full congressional investigation and hearings into war on Iran

  • OPPOSE further funding of ICE unless the following demands are met for ICE agents:

    • masks are prohibited and body cameras required

    • judicial warrants are required to enter private property

    • adherence to standardized use of force policies

    • stay away from schools, places of worship, medical facilities, and polling places

    • afford due process of law to all people

  • Speak out against the detention of non-violent immigrants.  Their detention is inhumane and extremely expensive ($152 per detainee per day), and it is better for all involved for immigrants to keep working, paying taxes, and being with their families while awaiting adjudication of their immigration claims.  Immigrants have reduced the federal deficit by nearly $15 TRILLION in thirty years and are far less likely to be incarcerated than US citizens.  Therefore, immigrants are a net positive to both our economy and the safety of our communities, making the Administration's detention policies inhumane, immoral, and fiscally unwise.

  • Demand all Epstein files be released with appropriate redactions only to protect victims' identities.

  • Vote to extend the enhanced ACA premium subsidies

  • Speak out against the Administration's plans to nationalize the midterm elections and have federal agents at polling places

  • Your support for the SAVE America Act is an un-American attempt to suppress the "sacred right" (Senator Wicker's words) of Americans to choose their representatives.  America does not have a problem with non-citizens trying to vote in our elections.
